Origins of Memorial Day

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day has evolved over time to become a significant American Holiday. Today, however, its true meaning is often overshadowed by summer’s start. Let’s take a moment to dive into the history of Memorial Day and rediscover its authentic significance.

After Civil War, on May 1, 1865, General John A Logan and a group of freed Union prisoners of war declared that Americans should decorate the graves of fallen soldiers across the nation. They held ceremonies where hymns were sung, readings were given and flowers were placed on graves. This solen act markets the inception of Memorial Day, a day dedicated to honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in war.

Observing the Day

Today is a day of remembrance. Tradition dictates that the American flag is flown at half-staff until noon, symbolizing the nation’s collective grieve, before raising it to full staff.  Towns across America hold parades and flag ceremonies this morning.  Americans are asked to pause their activities at 3 pm and observe a minute of silence.  By observing the National Moment of remembrance and engaging. in acts of remembrance, we can ensure that Memorial Day retains its place as a day or honor and gratitude.

Have a Safe Memorial Day.
